Sender ID registration for Austria (RTR)

Austria’s regulator RTR (Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH) has introduced a mandatory SMS Sender ID Register, as part of an anti-fraud and anti-spoofing initiative.


Since 1 October 2026, all alphanumeric Sender IDs used to send SMS to Austrian recipients must be registered to be displayed.
Your messages still get delivered. While your Sender ID isn’t registered yet, an unregistered alphanumeric sender is automatically replaced by an Austrian mobile number, so your SMS still arrives — only your own sender name is not shown until you register it. Once registered (and active), your own name is used again.


Registration is completely free.


Important dates

  • A mandatory 14-day waiting period applies before a registered Sender ID becomes active, so register in good time.


What you need for approval
RTR rejects incomplete or unclear registrations, so please provide all of the following:

  • The full legal company name, including the legal form (e.g. GmbH, Ltd., e.U., or the full name of the individual for a sole proprietorship) — not a shortened or trade-only name.
  • The address and contact details of the actual Sender ID owner.
  • A Sender ID clearly linked to your company — via your company name, brand, or product name. A vague abbreviation, or a sender matching a different brand/website, is rejected.
  • A clear justification in German explaining the connection between the Sender ID and your company.
  • If you operate under or through another company, make that corporate relationship clear.
  • Generic Sender IDs (e.g. “Info”, “Service”) are not permitted.


Good to know

  • Sender IDs are case-sensitive (“SAMSUNG” and “SaMsunG” are different).
  • After a rejection, the same Sender ID can only be resubmitted after 30 days — so it’s best to get it right the first time.
  • If RTR requests a correction, please send it to us (support@smstools.com), not directly to RTR — we handle all submissions through our dedicated portal.


How to register
You can register directly in your dashboard, on desktop or mobile: go to Send SMS → Manage sender, or Extra → Registered senders, then Register new sender.
Fill in the Sender ID, description, your company details and website, and submit. Your registered senders show their status (e.g. APPROVED).
You'll receive automated updates when the status changes.
