How Smstools works with PEPPOL

What is PEPPOL


PEPPOL stands for Pan European Public Procurement Online.

It is a secure and standardized network that allows companies and governments to exchange electronic documents such as invoices.


In Belgium, PEPPOL is the standard way to send and receive B2B invoices electronically.

Invoices sent via PEPPOL are delivered directly to the correct company using a unique identifier such as a VAT number or GLN.


How Smstools integrates with PEPPOL


Smstools is connected to the PEPPOL network.

This means we can automatically send your invoices through PEPPOL when the required company details are available.


Every Belgian B2B invoice is processed according to the information linked to your Smstools account.


If your company has only one location, you only need to maje sure your VAT number is correctly filled in on your Smstools account. Once this is done, PEPPOL invoicing is handled automatically.


Sending invoices with a VAT number


For companies with a single location, the VAT number is the correct and preferred identifier.


When a valid VAT number is added to your Smstools account:


  1. We send your invoice through the PEPPOL network
  2. Your VAT number is used as the unique identifier
  3. The invoice is delivered directly to the correct company inbox


This setup covers the vast majority of Smstools customers.


What it you do not have a VAT number


If no VAT number is linked to your Smstools account:


  1. The invoice will not be sent via the PEPPOL network
  2. PEPPOL delivery is only possible when a valid identifier is available


To receive invoices via PEPPOL, you must add a valid VAT number or request GLN configuration via support.


Can I work with a GLN instead of a VAT number?


Yes, this is possible.


A GLN or Global Location Number is an internationally recognized identifier used to identify companies and physical locations.

Some organizations use a GLN instead of a VAT number to receive PEPPOL invoices.


How to use a GLN with Smstools


If you want to receive invoices via PEPPOL using a GLN:


  1. Make sure you have a valid 13 digit GLN
  2. Contact support@smstools.com
  3. Provide the correct GLN number linked to your organization
  4. We will update your Smstools account


Once configured, your invoices will be processed via PEPPOL using your GLN instead of a VAT number.
